Role Title: Sports Editor Sligo Champion          Location: Sligo

The Sligo Champion Sports Editor oversees and manages sport coverage in the Sligo Champion, in print and online (through the Independent) and also wider sport coverage from the North West when relevant, under the direction of the Editor. The Sports Editor will represent The Sligo Champion, Irish Independent and Mediahuis Ireland  to a very high standard.

Role Responsibilities

• Manage freelance writers
• Match and sports event coverage
• Interviews and sports feature-writing to a high standard
• Work closely with local photographers and contributors
• Help develop social media/digital strategy with the editor and the digital audience team
• Edit the content to a very high standard
• Develop new ideas
• Manage the sport section and lay out pages

Experience and Qualifications

• Sport reporting experience and management is essential
• Working knowledge of covering sport in County Sligo is an advantage
• Full driving licence

Skills (technical and non technical)

• Demonstrate an appetite to increase market-share and develop The Sligo Champion and Irish Independent as the leaders in local sport coverage
• Excellent communication skills required
• Writing, editing and page layout abilities (Adobe Indesign)
• Ability to work on own initiative
• Good working knowledge of social media and SEO
• Good leadership and decision-making abilities
• Can work under pressure in a performance driven environment
• Tenacity with a ‘can do’ attitude
• Detail orientated
• Ability to make decisions in line with company policy on own initiative
