Job Title: Sub-Editor (3 month FTC)

Reporting to: Chief Sub-Editor

 

Role Purpose

Mediahuis Ireland is seeking a Sub-Editor, who will work with an experienced team of multi-channel sub-editors across our digital and print content. The successful applicant will report to the Chief Sub-Editor and will ensure the highest standards are adhered to regarding the style, grammar and tone of content across our titles and publications. The role will include working collaboratively with your colleagues to ensure the internal subbing desk meets the expectations of both editors and readers, and ensuring that potential issues are identified and corrected prior to publication. The successful applicant will also ensure the consistent application of digital-ready workflows across the subbing function in collaboration with his/her colleagues.

 

Role Responsibilities (Overview)

  • Edit articles for grammar, punctuation, clarity and accuracy, and ensure the finished content meets the expectations of both editors and readers, and that potential issues are identified and corrected prior to publication

  • Digitally enhance articles to an consistent standard

  • Write compelling headlines that meet both print expectations, and SEO and UX demands for digital

  • Fact-check and liaise with the writer and/or News/Features Desk where appropriate

  • Ensure content is free from legal issues

  • Work to exacting deadlines

  • Comprehensive knowledge of house style

  • Understand and uphold the style, standards and ethics of Mediahuis Ireland

  • Edit photos, pulling photos from image management applications, cropping photos for publication, verifying images

 

Experience & Qualifications (Minimum Experience & Essential Knowledge)

  • A knowledge of digital publishing CMSs is required. A knowledge of the Atex P-Series print CMS, InDesign and InCopy would be an advantage

  • At least three years of professional journalism experience as an editor or sub-editor with digital experience would be preferred

  • Experience of a newsroom environment would be an advantage

  • An excellent knowledge of media law, especially defamation, privacy, copyright and data protection

  • A thorough knowledge of Mediahuis Ireland publications and Irish news and current affairs is also required

  • Carry out your duties at all times in accordance with the Mediahuis Editorial Code of Practice and relevant professional and legal codes
