Role Purpose 

We are looking for a journalist to join the Irish Independent Business team on a 12 month contract. This is an exceptional opportunity to work with our multi-award winning team across the Irish Independent and independent.ie.

The successful candidate will be able to write in clear and concise English, capable of working well under pressure and comfortable working across digital, print, podcast and video.

You will be an enthusiastic, hard-working and fast-learning journalist who can thrive on a busy news beat.

You will have an unrivalled opportunity to write high-quality unique stories on business and economic issues and to work with a highly experienced team of agenda setting journalists in an environment that values professional development, enthusiasm and energy.

Role Responsibilities (Overview)

• Report on Irish business and economics stories accurately, quickly, fairly and clearly

• Develop contacts at the highest levels of business and government

• Help develop our digital business offering across all platforms and story types

• Represent the organisation externally

• Work collaboratively with the Business Editor and wider editorial teams

• Deliver high quality journalism to tight deadlines

• Some international travel

• Work early mornings, evening and weekends as required.

• Carry out your duties at all times in accordance with the Mediahuis Editorial Code of Practice and relevant professional and legal codes.

Experience & Qualifications (Minimum Experience & Essential Knowledge)

• Experience as a journalist including working in national media, trade publications or regional media.

• Good knowledge of Irish, European and world business issues. Excellent written English.

Skills - Behavioural

• A passion for business news and a commitment to journalistic integrity.

• Excellent communication and networking skills to build contacts and sources.

• Ability to work under tight deadlines and adapt to changing news cycles.

• Strong attention to detail and accuracy.

Skills - Technical

• Excellent news judgment coupled with the ability to write engaging copy and to develop in-depth analysis.

• Excellent writing and editing skills, with the ability to convey complex information in an accessible manner.

• Ability to represent the Irish Independent in a positive manner on broadcast media and at external events as necessary

• Strong research and analytical skills.

• Excellent knowledge of libel law
