Job Title: Editor, Sunday Independent

Function:  Publishing

Department:   Editorial

Reporting to:   Group Editor-in-Chief

 

Role Purpose

The Editor of the Sunday Independent is responsible for the editorial direction and superlative journalism at Ireland’s best-selling newspaper and its digital output on the Irish Independent.

They will work closely with the Group Editor-in-Chief to ensure the Sunday Independent aligns to our digital-focused strategy, driving audience engagement, with a focus on subscribers.

They will provide strategic direction and leadership for the editorial team, ensuring alignment with the Mediahuis Ireland’s vision and goals.

 

Role Responsibilities (Overview) 

  • Develop and implement content strategies for both digital and print platforms, focusing on audience engagement, growth, and retention.

  • Drive digital transformation initiatives, including leading the increased integration of teams across editorial functions.

  • Analyse audience metrics to inform editorial decisions where appropriate.

  • Work collaboratively with the other direct reports of the Editor-in-Chief.

  • Achieving circulation and revenue success through astute selection and display of content that satisfies the needs of the print newspaper’s audience.

  • Setting the direction of and projecting the unique voice of the newspaper.

  • Ensuring the quality standards of published content.

  • Ensuring published content is free of legal liability.

  • Manage the editorial budget in conjunction with the Director of Publishing Operations / Managing Editor.

  • Leading a team; mentoring and coaching members of the team and holding regular performance reviews.

Experience & Qualifications (Minimum Experience & Essential Knowledge)

  • Proven experience as a senior editor, with a strong track record in both print and digital journalism.

  • Experience managing a team in a fast-paced environment.

  • Impeccable writing and editing skills

  • Proficient in newsroom software and content management systems

  • Expert knowledge of media law and ethical guidelines for journalism
