Job Title: Sub-Editor (Features) - Maternity Cover Contract
Function: Editorial

Reporting to: Chief Sub-Editor (Features)
Role Purpose
The Sub-Editor (Features) is responsible for curating, editing and enhancing content for
publication across our digital and print channels.
The role holder works in collaboration with the Section Editors to oversee the editing of
content for titles such as the Irish Independent website and its associated print titles, as well
as the Sunday World website and print title.
The role holder ensures the delivery of finished content, ready for publication, across all titles
to the required quality standards and works closely with the audience team to ensure content
is digital ready at all times.
This production function covers a five-day operation in our integrated newsroom on a rostered
basis.
Role Responsibilities (Overview)
Writing compelling headlines that meet both SEO and UX demands
Editing articles for grammar, punctuation, clarity and accuracy, and enhancing content for digital publication as required, at all times upholding the style, standards and ethics of Mediahuis Ireland
Fact checking, ensuring content is free from legal issues, and liaising with the writer where appropriate
Editing photos: pulling photos from image management applications, cropping photos for publication, verifying images
Working to exacting deadlines
Giving a final review to content under direction
Working to meet specific individual goals as assigned
Carry out your duties at all times in accordance with the Mediahuis Editorial Code of Practice and relevant professional and legal codes.
Experience & Qualifications (Minimum Experience & Essential Knowledge)
At least 2 years of professional journalism experience as an editor or sub-editor with digital experience
Experience of a newsroom environment
Familiarity with Desk, P-Series, InDesign, InCopy and digital CMS platforms is desirable
Comprehensive knowledge of house style
A good knowledge of media law, especially defamation, privacy, copyright and data protection
