Job Title: Environment Correspondent

Reporting to: News Editor
Role Purpose
The Environment Correspondent will be a key member of the Irish Independent newsroom and will source, write and break exclusive content as well as shape the longer term news agenda for Mediahuis Ireland.
They will drive the Irish Independent’s coverage of the climate crisis, ensuring it is accessible and relevant for our readership. Their brief will also include a strong focus on the lived environment encompassing planning, housing and transport.
The ideal candidate will already have a strong grasp of public policy in these areas and be capable of producing insightful journalism and news analysis within our multi-media newsroom.
The successful candidate will have a wide network of new contacts that they will continue to develop.

Role Responsibilities (Overview)
Consistently break original stories and write agenda-setting analysis.
Create and write up-to-date, accurate, balanced and engaging content in a variety of formats including explainers, profiles, interviews and long form projects.
Contribute to the Irish Independent’s audio and video output.
React quickly, accurately and professionally to breaking news, keeping stories updated across digital and social platforms.
Work with the wider newsroom team and liaise with the news desk and editors in providing coverage.
Carry out your duties at all times in accordance with Mediahuis’ Editorial Code of Practice and relevant professional and legal codes.
Experience & Qualifications (Minimum Experience & Essential Knowledge)
Proven journalistic experience, with demonstrated ability to break news and write agenda-setting commentary.
An outstanding grasp of environment issues, including planning, housing and transport
Strong understanding of the climate crisis
